The TMC leader visited flood-ravaged areas in the district
Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) president G.K. Vasan has called upon the State Government to declare Cuddalore a natural calamity hit district as incessant rains and floods had damaged standing crops and properties on a massive scale in the district.
Speaking to reporters after visiting flood-ravaged areas on Tuesday, Mr. Vasan said that around 50 persons had died in the heavy rains in the district according to reports.
Health hazard
The State Government should declare Cuddalore a natural calamity hit district and request the Centre to provide compensation from the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund.
He said water stagnated in several roads and residential localities posing health hazards. The Government should ensure that sewage does not mix with drinking water and conduct health camps in all the affected areas to prevent outbreak of water-borne diseases.
The heavy downpour over the last few days had wreaked havoc on crops and farmers had suffered heavy losses.
The present compensation provided by the government should be considered as an interim relief and the government should provide compensation of Rs.50,000 per acre for crops damaged in the floods.
It should also take urgent measures to waive crop loans of affected farmers, he said.
