TMC to play a major role in Assembly, local bodies: Vasan

It will draw alliance strategy after analysing ‘winning combinations’

Tamil Maanila Congress (TMC) president G.K. Vasan said that he would pave way for the party to play a major role in the Assembly and local bodies, indicating that the TMC would draw the alliance strategy after analysing ‘winning combinations’ for the coming Assembly elections.

Addressing a public meeting here on Tuesday night, he said that the party had achieved substantial growth as a movement within five months, enrolling 45 lakh members, and would grow further by playing its role in the Assembly and local bodies.

“The party would draw strategies while forging alliance to make its presence felt in the Assembly and local bodies,” he said without elaborating on the alliance strategy.

“Within a short span of time, the TMC has emerged as the people’s lovable and credible party and poised to grow further,” he said, and claimed that the TMC was the only party in the State to have more number of youths.

After he launched the “towards the people” programme a couple of months ago, he had visited about 60 Assembly segments, spread across 20 districts, and listened to the grievances of a wide section of society.

Though not in power, he tried to redress their grievances by bringing them to the notice of the authorities, said Mr. Vasan.

While touring the districts, he had met farmers, weavers, fishermen, women, students and youths, and received tremendous response from them, he claimed.

The party achieved a significant growth during the last five months but still had to go a long way, he added.

Listing out the grievances of the people of the district, he appealed to the State government to accord permission for installing a Kamaraj statue, the Centre to provide compensation to farmers whose lands were acquired in Tirupuvanam and Manamadurai regions for laying four-lane road. Mr. Vasan requested the Southern Railway to reopen the reservation counter at Sivaganga station.

He also appealed to the Archaeological Survey of India to sanction more funds for the ongoing excavation work at Keezhadi near Madurai and ensure sufficient safeguards for those involved in the excavation.
