Achievements in Shipping Ministry

  • Under the able guidance of Shri G.K. Vasan Ministry of Shipping  is implementing the National Maritime Development Programme aimed at comprehensive development of port, shipping & development transport sectors in the country. Total investment under NMP is 1 lakh crore.
  • Mr. G.K. Vasan is doing his best as part of 12 month committee headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh whose main function is to fast track the implementation of infrastructure projects & monitor their performance.
  • Agreement signed to develop & construct deep draught iron ore terminal in Paradip Port.
  • PPP (Public-Private Partnerships)coal terminals in Paradip Port, Mormugoa Port, contains terminal at Ennore & Tuticorin, iron ore handling facility at new Mangalore port has been processed.
  • Port Blair declared as major port.
  • Dedication of Pipavav Shipyard.
  • “Navaratna Status” to Shipping Corporation of India making it 17th Central Public Sector Enterprise in the country to be awarded.
  • Four lane elevated expressway from Chennai to Maduravoyal.
  • Due to goodwill gesture of Shri G.K. Vasan major strike by labour unions averted.
  • Ennore-Manali Road Project (EMRP) in Tamilnadu to be completed in two years.
  • A threefold increase is projected in traffic handling capacity of major ports by 2025-2026.
  • Creation of Indian maritime investigation cell.
  • Inspection of various ports of the country including major ports like Mumbai, Tuticorin etc.
  • Steps to combat incidents of piracy.
  • Approval of cruise shipping policy.
